Image SEO Filename and Alt Text Generator

Photographers upload more images than any other kind of business, and almost all of them are called DSC_4471.jpg. This turns a whole gallery into filenames and alt text that search engines and screen readers can actually read.

Leave blank and we will use a standard running order for your genre.

How to use it

Rename before you upload, not after.

This is the part people get wrong. Renaming a file inside your media library after it has been uploaded does not change the URL the image is served from, so the benefit is lost. Rename on your desktop, then upload.

What makes a good photography filename

  • Describe the frame, then the place. ceremony-hampton-manor-solihull.webp beats wedding-photographer-solihull-best.webp.
  • Use hyphens, never underscores. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners.
  • Keep it lowercase and short. Under about seventy characters is comfortable.
  • Never repeat the same keyword across forty files in a gallery. Vary by what is actually in each frame, which is what this tool does with the shot list.

What makes good alt text

Write it for someone who cannot see the image. That is its actual job, it is a legal accessibility requirement in many places, and it happens to be exactly what search engines and AI assistants parse best.

  • Do not start with “image of” or “photo of”. The screen reader already says it is an image.
  • Keep it under about 125 characters, which is where many screen readers cut off.
  • Include the venue and city naturally, once, because it is genuinely descriptive rather than because it is a keyword.
  • Decorative images, like a background texture, should have empty alt text rather than a description.

Why this matters more for you than for other businesses

Google Images and the image results inside AI answers are a real discovery channel for photographers, and one almost nobody optimises for. A gallery of forty correctly named, correctly described images is forty more ways to be found, on a page you were publishing anyway. There is more detail on this in image and speed SEO.

Questions

Questions photographers ask us.

Does renaming image files really affect rankings?

It is a minor signal on its own and a meaningful one at scale. One renamed file changes nothing. A site where every image across two hundred gallery pages is descriptively named, with real alt text, performs measurably better in image search and adds context to the page it sits on.

Should I put my city in every single filename?

No. That reads as stuffing and adds nothing after the first few. Put the venue in, and the city where it is genuinely relevant. This tool only adds the city when it differs from the venue.

Why does the tool output .webp rather than .jpg?

Because you should be serving WebP. It is typically 30 to 40 percent smaller than JPEG at visually identical quality. If your platform will not accept WebP, just change the extension.

Is the alt text good enough to use as is?

It is a solid starting point and better than the vast majority of what is published. Read it through and adjust anything that does not match what is actually in the frame, because accuracy is the whole point.
