Portrait and family
SEO for portrait and family photographers who want a fuller calendar.
Shorter booking cycles, repeat clients and searches that are almost entirely local. Portrait SEO rewards consistency more than any other genre, because the same families come back.
The market
Short cycles, repeat business, tight geography.
Portrait and family work is the opposite of weddings in almost every respect that matters for search. The cycle from searching to booking is often days rather than months. The geography is tighter, frequently a specific suburb rather than a city. And the same client comes back, sometimes annually, for years.
That combination makes portrait SEO the fastest genre to show a return, and the one where being second in the map pack genuinely costs you money every week.
Where the demand actually is
- Occasion terms: family photos, extended family sessions, milestone birthdays, graduation, maternity, engagement, and the seasonal spike around autumn and Christmas
- Suburb level local terms, which are far less contested than the city term and convert better because proximity matters to a family with small children
- Location terms: the parks, beaches and woodland people search by name when they want photos taken somewhere specific
- Practical questions: what to wear, how long a session takes, what age is best for photos, how many images you get, how much it costs
- Studio versus outdoor, which is a genuine decision point people search on
The autumn problem, and the opportunity
Most family photographers are overwhelmed from September to December and quiet from January to April. The searches, though, happen year round. Content built for spring sessions, summer beach shoots and January maternity work smooths the calendar considerably, and almost nobody publishes it because everyone is busy in the season that pays.
Repeat clients are a search asset too
A family that books you every year is worth more than a wedding client, over time. That makes your Google Business Profile and reviews disproportionately valuable here, because the same happy client reviewing you annually creates exactly the review recency signal local ranking rewards.
Where to focus
What works in portrait SEO.
Suburb pages over city pages
For family work, proximity wins. Three well built suburb pages usually outperform one city page, because a parent with a toddler is not driving forty minutes.
Session type pages
Maternity, newborn, milestone, extended family and graduation are separate searches with separate intent. One page each, not one page listing all of them.
Answer the practical questions
What to wear is one of the highest volume searches in family photography and one of the least well answered. It also happens to pre sell your styling expertise.
Questions
Questions photographers ask us.
How fast can portrait SEO work?
Faster than any other genre. Suburb level terms and map pack positions can move within eight to twelve weeks, and because the booking cycle is days rather than months, enquiries convert to paid sessions almost immediately.
Should I have a studio address on my site?
If you have a studio clients visit, yes, and it strengthens local ranking considerably. If you work from home, use a service area configuration and keep the address private. Both are supported and we set up whichever fits.
Is family photography SEO competitive?
Less than weddings in most markets, and dramatically less at suburb level. Many family photographers rely entirely on Facebook groups and word of mouth, which leaves search relatively open in a lot of areas.
What about mini sessions?
They are a strong seasonal search term and a good conversion offer, but build the page as a permanent fixture that you update, rather than publishing and deleting one each year. Deleting throws away the ranking you spent a season earning.
