How Photographers Get Recommended by ChatGPT and AI Search
Clients increasingly ask an assistant who to hire. Being the name it returns is a different job from ranking first, and it is winnable now.
AI assistants build recommendations from sources they already trust: sites that rank, carry clear structure and are corroborated elsewhere on the web. The work is direct answers, clean schema, consistent business information and genuine third party mentions. Roughly 80 percent overlaps with conventional SEO.
What is actually happening
Someone asks an assistant to recommend a wedding photographer in their city. They get a short answer naming two or three. Most never scroll further. If you are not named, the search ended before your website was a possibility.
This is not replacing search. It is adding a layer above it, and that layer is currently far less contested than the search results underneath.
Where AI answers come from
Broadly, three sources: pages that already rank well, structured data that states facts unambiguously, and third party corroboration confirming what you claim about yourself.
The practical consequence is that you cannot skip conventional SEO to chase AI visibility. The systems draw disproportionately from what already ranks. Good SEO is the entry ticket.
The six things that make you citable
- Answer questions directly and early. Put the answer in the first sentence or two, then elaborate. Content that buries the answer under three paragraphs of scene setting is hard to quote and rarely gets quoted.
- Implement clean structured data. LocalBusiness with an accurate service area, Service markup for what you offer, FAQPage on question content. This removes guesswork.
- Be consistent everywhere. The same business name, service area and description on your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and venue supplier lists. Contradictions make a system uncertain, and uncertain systems omit you.
- Get corroborated by others. Venue supplier lists, local directories, features, genuine mentions. A claim that exists only on your own site is weak evidence.
- Be specific and verifiable. Concrete facts about venues, timings, prices and process outperform adjectives. “Golden hour at this venue lands on the west terrace from about 7pm in June” is quotable. “We capture magical moments” is not.
- Use clear heading structure. Short, well signposted sections that can be lifted independently. The same structure that has always won featured snippets.
How to check where you stand
Ask the assistants directly, the way a client would. “Who are the best wedding photographers in [your city]?” “Recommend a newborn photographer near [your suburb].” Run it across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Note who appears and which sources get cited.
Do it monthly. These systems are non deterministic, so a single test tells you very little, but a trend over several months tells you a lot. Pay particular attention to which sources are cited, because those are usually the directories and listing sites you should be present on.
The honest limits
Nobody can guarantee placement in an AI answer. The systems vary day to day and the mechanics change. Anyone selling guaranteed AI visibility is selling something they do not control.
What is reliable is that the underlying work, structure, schema, corroboration and specific useful content, is the same work that has made sites rank for a decade. It is durable whichever way the technology moves.
Should you block AI crawlers?
Some photographers block them to protect their images. It is a legitimate position, and it also removes you from consideration in AI answers entirely. For most photographers, right now, visibility is worth more than the protection. It is a real trade off with reasonable arguments on both sides, and it should be a deliberate decision rather than a default.
Questions

Is AI search actually sending photographers enquiries yet?
In small but growing numbers, and it varies a lot by market and genre. The stronger argument for acting now is not current volume, it is that the work overlaps almost entirely with conventional SEO, so the cost of doing it early is close to zero.
Do I need a separate strategy for this?
No. You need conventional SEO done well, plus more attention to structured data, consistency and direct answering. Treating it as a separate product is mostly a way to charge twice for one job.
Does having lots of Instagram followers help?
Not directly. Social profiles are weakly weighted as corroboration at best. A venue supplier list mention or a local directory entry does more for AI visibility than a large following.
