Wedding photography
SEO for wedding photographers who are tired of Instagram leads.
The most competitive local market in photography, and the one where search still outperforms every other channel for enquiry quality. Couples who find you on Google have usually already booked the venue and set the budget.
The market
Three things make wedding SEO different.
1. The booking cycle is long and it distorts everything
A couple searching in March may be booking for eighteen months later. That means the enquiries arriving today are for a season that is barely in your calendar, and it means the work you publish now is being read by people whose money you will not see for over a year.
It also means impatience kills wedding SEO programmes. Six months in, when rankings have clearly improved and the diary has not visibly changed, plenty of photographers quit. The bookings were usually two months away.
2. Venues are the highest leverage terms in the entire industry
“Wedding photographer in Manchester” is contested by every studio within fifty miles. “Photographer at [specific venue]” is contested by almost nobody, is searched by couples who have already committed money to a date, and converts far better.
Most venues have between ten and two hundred searches a month attached to their name plus photography terms. Individually that sounds small. Twenty venue pages is a serious channel, and it compounds, because venues often start recommending the photographer who clearly knows their space.
3. Style language is a filter, not a magnet
Very few couples search “fine art film documentary elopement photographer”. They search their city and their venue, then filter by style once they are looking at your work. Style language belongs on the page to help the right people self select, not as your primary ranking strategy.
The couple searching your venue name has already spent money on the date. That is the warmest lead in photography.
What we build
The wedding programme.
Venue pages, built properly
One page per venue you genuinely know, with real galleries from there, honest notes on light and timings, wet weather options and the portrait spots most photographers miss. Written so a couple reading it concludes you have obviously shot there, because you have.
City and region pages
The head terms, attacked once the site has enough authority to hold a position rather than on day one. Backed by the venue pages that link into them.
Pre enquiry content
Cost guides, timeline planning, what happens on the day, how to feel comfortable being photographed. These catch couples earlier and pre sell you before the first email.
Seasonal and light content
Golden hour by month for your region, winter wedding light, what a wet ceremony actually looks like. Highly searched, rarely answered well, and it demonstrates competence better than any about page.
Google Business Profile and reviews
The map pack matters enormously for city terms, and weddings produce emotional clients who write genuinely good reviews if you ask at the right moment.
Technical and image work
Wedding galleries are the heaviest pages on the web. If yours take eight seconds on a phone, you are losing couples who never contacted you and never will.
Questions
Questions photographers ask us.
How competitive is wedding photography SEO really?
In major cities it is one of the most competitive local niches there is, comparable to legal or cosmetic dentistry, because thousands of photographers target the same city terms. In smaller towns and for venue specific terms it is often remarkably open. That gap is the entire strategy.
How long before I see wedding bookings from SEO?
Rankings usually move within three to five months. Enquiries follow. Booked weddings can be another nine to fifteen months behind that because of the booking cycle. If you need income within ninety days, paid ads are the honest answer, not SEO.
Should I target elopements and micro weddings separately?
Yes, if you genuinely shoot them, because the intent and often the geography are completely different. Elopement couples frequently search by landscape or region rather than city, and they travel, which widens your market considerably.
I already blog every wedding. Why am I not ranking?
Almost always structure. Posts titled with couples’ first names, no venue in the heading, no location context and little text give search engines nothing to rank. The same galleries restructured around venue and location often start ranking within weeks, without shooting anything new. See blogging that ranks.
Do venue recommendations still matter?
Very much, and they compound with SEO rather than competing with it. A venue supplier list link is a genuine local citation and a referral channel at once. Ranking for the venue name often gets you noticed by the venue itself.
